WHAT THE POLICE DO.....
WHAT THE POLICE DO.....
After Mr. Ashutosh agreed to buy his article if it's worth publishing, Varun started to actively work on the case. The first this he needed before starting his work was a complete list of the number of missing cases filed. So, he went to the local police station to meet the Assistant-Inspector.

INT. POLICE STATION
INT. ASSISTANT-INSPECTOR'S CABIN

Varun sat in front of Assistant-inspector Nagesh Tiwari.

'Good morning sir. I'm Varun.'       said Varun.

'Good morning. What can I do for you ?'       asked Mr. Nagesh.

'Sir I'm a journalist and I wanted a complete list of missing cases reported this year.'      replied Varun.

'Sorry, I can't give you that. Those reports aren't for public.'     said Mr. Nagesh.

'But sir, those reports aren't crime....'    said Varun.

'No. I can't help you. The rules are rules.'     interrupted Mr. Nagesh.

'I can understand.'      replied Varun.

Varun takes a deep breath.

'Can you atleast tell me the procedure you follow when a missing case is reported ?'     asked Varun, who was trying build a good relation with Mr. Nagesh.

'Yes, sure.'       replied Mr. Nagesh.

Mr. Nagesh cont'd       'Well, most of the missing cases are reported too late. They wait for 24hrs before reporting and that's a lot of time. '

'But sir, the basic definition of missing is a person who is absent for atleast twenty four hours.'      said Varun.

'That's actually a myth. You should report the case as early as possible. Because the first seventy two hours are crucial.'       replied Mr. Nagesh.

'Why is that?'      asked Varun.

'Because that's how long a police officer will look into this matter actively. If a person is missing, we can find them within three days. But, if they doesn't want to be found, we cannot do anything.'      replied Mr. Nagesh.

'So that means, you work on a case for only three days?'       asked Varun

'No. We work for few days but, you know...how many cases are reported here. So, we can't work on one case for weeks.'      replied Mr. Nagesh.

'Thank you so much for your time.'       said Varun with a cute smile.

Varun cont'd     'Is there any way you can.... give me the report?'

Mr. Nagesh laughed.

'For which newspaper do you  work?'     asked Mr. Nagesh.

'I'm a freelancer.'     replied Varun.

Mr. Nagesh smiled.

'Trying to hit a big shot?'       asked Mr. Nagesh.

Mr. Nagesh cont'd      'I might help you. But, that is more like mutual help... Helping each other.'

'How's that?'     asked Varun, who was confused.

'If your article gets published in any newspaper, you should mention my name in it. You should say that, I helped you.'        said Mr. Nagesh.

'Sure. I can do that.'      replied Varun.

'Okay. Come on next week Tuesday. I'll give you the report.'      said Mr. Nagesh.

Mr. Nagesh cont'd       'I won't be able to give you the complete report. So, I'll give you the name, their contact address and a remark if it's solved or not.'

'That's completely fine. Thank you so much.'      replied Varun.

Tuesday

Varun got the report from Mr. Nagesh.  There were 120 missing cases filed this year out of which 76 cases were solved. When he cross-checked this data with the data he had, he found that 32 missing cases were not reported to the police.

Varun made three bins, red, yellow and green. He put the 32 missing cases that were not reported to the police in the red bin, the solved cases in the green and the rest in the blue bin.
