Isaac stood over the dog / wolf hybrid corpse that was brought in. He could feel the sweat

pooling around the scalpel in his hand. It was going to be his first necropsy after.

"Are you nervous?" Dr. Sam, his mentor, asked.

"Uh no. No, not at all." Isaac said.

"Is that why you're starting to sweat?"

Isaac laughed as he grabbed the napkin from Dr. Sam and wiped his forehead.

“It's okay to be a little nervous your first time, especially with the possibility of discovering

a new species. It's a real shame they had to kill it though. ” Dr. Sam rubbed his chin.

“I'm not so sure they had to, sir. You know how trigger happy these cops here are when it

comes to wild animals. ” Isaac retorted.

“Now now, Isaac,” Dr. Sam said, “Now's not the time to be judgmental. We have a job to

do. Besides, isn't this exciting ?! ”

Isaac shook his head and handed Dr. Sam the scalpel, and runs off without a word of

warning. Dr. Sam jumped back, grabbing the scalpel out the air before it hit the floor. First, he

took a few steps to run after him, but he stopped.

"I think he just needs a few minutes." Dr. Sam said to himself as he walked back over to the

table. He placed the scalpel back on the exam table and began checking the fur over for marks.

Then he starts to check the teeth and eyes when Isaac makes his way back into the exam room.

“Ah Isaac, welcome back! I hope you're feeling better; I was just about to log the external

observations before beginning the opening of- “

Isaac held up his hands, appearing out of breath, “Wait! O-On my way back here, I stopped

by the lab for the samples. Thinking maybe it would help identify the creature. ”

“You did?” Dr. Sam asked, “So you didn’t leave to vomit?”

Sighing, Isaac said, “I did, but that’s not the point here! I asked the receptionist for the

results, and she had me go and talk with Steven the Lab tech. Apparently, the sample we gave

had turned out to be inconclusive.”

Dr. Sam looked up at Isaac, “What do you mean inconclusive? I gathered those samples

myself. You dropped them off personally on the way in. We didn’t give the wrong samples.”

Isaac shook his head, “He’s not saying that. It’s definitely the right sample, but he’s saying

the results themselves can’t be right.”

Dr. Sam looked at Isaac, confusion coloring his face.

Isaac continued, "I think you should come to look at the results. Yourself, Doc."

Dr. Sam nodded, “Very well. Let’s go.”

They walked quickly, the white corridor whizzing by in a flash of light with their footsteps

echoing loudly throughout. They reached the door just as Steven opened it.

“Aah!” Steven yelled, startled. “I-I-I was just on my way to see you guys! Those samples!

It’s impossible! I can’t explain it!”

“Try!” Isaac said, grabbing Steven’s shoulders firmly. This made Steven look in Isaac’s eyes

for a moment before shaking his head. He gently shook Isaac’s grip from his shoulders and took

a deep breath. Steven didn’t say anything else and instead pushed past the two men, walking out

toward the lab. Isaac and Dr. Sam looked at each other then followed Steven back to the room.

When they got there, Steven was standing over the animal, silent. The others approached him

cautiously. They stood next to him for a while, letting the silence fill the room.

Isaac broke the silence, “Just…what did the results say?”

Steven remained silent for a beat, then said, “The results. This thing has human DNA.”

Dr. Sam laughed and said, “Come on Steven! Is this some kind of joke or something?” He

laughed louder and patted him on the back.

Steven shook him off, "This is not a fucking joke! I tested the samples three different times,

and It's the same! The shape and even the number of chromosomes match human DNA exactly!

Nothing in those genes says this thing is canine!”

Dr. Sam stopped laughing then, looking down at the creature. He took out his flashlight and

looked into its eyes.

“My god,” Dr. Sam whispered. “I don’t believe this. Isaac, grab the results from the lab.”

Isaac nodded and ran out of the room. The two doctors stood in collective shock. Dr. Sam

slowly picked up the scalpel and held it over the specimen. Dr. Sam and Steven looked at each

other a moment, then Dr. Sam went in to make the first incision.

A paw pushed back.

Dr. Sam dropped the scalpel on the floor but didn’t notice. He stared at the body as it began

to show signs of life. Steven ran out of the room, yelling incoherently. The Doctor was still

frozen when he heard the creature breathing raggedly. Isaac came back, papers in hand.

"Hey, where'd Steven run off to? Hey Doc, are you okay?"

The creature, who everyone thought was dead, spoke, “W-wait. Stop. Human.”

Isaac dropped the papers and ran up to the table. His eyes were wide with fright. His hand

reached out tentatively to instinctively pet the creature when Dr. Sam suddenly grabbed the beast

by the neck and squeezed. Isaac didn't register what was happening until it was too late.

“What are you doing?!” Isaac yelled, struggling to get Dr. Sam’s hand from around its neck.

“Don’t you understand? This thing should not exist!”

Once the doctor was finished, Isaac turned him around and said, “Well then, doctor, neither

should you.”

Issacs's head and upper body reformed into something wolf-like, then he ripped his throat

and jaw from his body. Isaac then grabbed the body from the table, held it in his arms and

nuzzled it.

“I’m sorry. I will return your body to your pack, young one.” Isaac said as he pushed his

way out the doors.
