José Martí was born on January 28, 1853 in Havana, Cuba.

Son of Mariano Martí Navarro, a Spanish soldier, and of his also Spanish wife, Leonor Pérez Cabrera, originally from the Canary Islands.

When he was four years old, his family moved from Cuba to Valencia, Spain, his father's land, but two years later they returned to the island and he attended a local public school, in the Santa Clara neighborhood, where his father worked as prison guard.

As a teenager he ran student publications. In 1867, he enrolled in the Professional School of Painting and Sculpture in Havana, known as San Alejandro, to take drawing classes.

When the Ten Years' War broke out in 1868, José Martí and his friend Fermín joined the Cuban nationalist cause.

Organized in the United States the Cuban Revolutionary Party whose main objective was to achieve the independence of Cuba.

Martí traveled to Costa Rica, where Antonio Maceo lived, to convince him of the need for his participation.

On October 21, 1869, he was arrested and imprisoned on charges of treason and bribery; José Martí confessed to the charges and was sentenced to six years in prison.

His mother wrote letters to the government requesting his release, and his father hired a lawyer friend.

He was forced to do forced labor in the quarries of Havana.

Shortly after they pardoned him and transferred him to the Isle of Pines. His sentence was commuted to exile.
