My eyes pop open. I sit up quickly in bed, my head banging into something.  I moan, "Ug."

Beta Corrin River, my best friend, is rubbing his head. He laughs, pain laced through it, "Man, El, your head's as hard as rocks! You sure it isn't full of them."

I elbow him, "Come on Core, not now. What happened while I was passed out?"

Corrin opens his mouth, canines sharp and big, "Alpha Tane sent representatives, they say they're just here to observe and negotiate."

I shout, "And Alpha Bronze just let them in!"

Corrin nods, "El, your stepfather knows what he's doing."

I mutter, "Does he? They're the enemy."

Corrin shakes his head at me like I'm crazy. I roll my eyes, my head still smarting from the first hit. The collision with Corrin didn't help. Now I had a headache, from both the news and the knots on my head.

I took a deep breath in, herbs and ointment fumes calming me slightly. I remembered how many times I had been in this bed. How many times had Appel and Rixi healed me? How many times did Corrin have to hold me down as they reset my bones? How many times did I have to bite a leather strip to keep me from biting my tongue off as they took out a bullet?

I almost smiled. Memories, man. I must've still been giddy with adrenaline, not knowing if I was safe even at base.
